Canvas LMS Integrates with Google Meet

Share

Connection matters. As I’ve seen my kids reconnect with teachers and classmates through videoconferencing this week, it’s become obvious that spending time, even virtually, with classmates and teachers can help students better adjust to remote learning. That’s why the product and partnerships teams at Canvas has been working closely with our technology partners to offer new integrations that make teaching and learning easier.

Today, we announced a new LTI integration to connect with students and teachers using Google Hangouts Meet as their conferencing tool. They now have the ability to add a Hangouts Meet code to their Canvas Course, Course Announcement, Module or via Calendar.

Once added to a course, the Google Meet is ready for teachers and students to join. You do not have to update the link to start a new session. When you’re ready for your next class to start, the same link will create a new Google Meet (Note - Google Meet will launch in a new tab, and if students are on a mobile device they will need the Google Meet app, or can call in to participate via phone).

In addition, Google is giving free access to their advanced Hangouts Meet video-conferencing capabilities to all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers globally through July 2020. These advanced features include:
Larger meetings, for up to 250 participants per call
Live streaming for up to 100,000 viewers within a domain
The ability to record meetings and save them to Google Drive

See below for more details on how to get started.

Integration Details

Canvas customers with Google accounts will be able to create audio and video conference calls (Meets) using the Google Meet integration with Canvas. This integration provides a way to link to a Google Meet from within the Canvas LMS Rich Content Editor, meaning that teachers can link to a conference from calendar invites, discussions, pages, assignments, and anywhere else that the Rich Content Editor is available.

The Google Hangouts Meet LTI integration can be viewed in the new or classic Rich Content Editor.

Getting Started

Detailed information about enabling Google Hangouts Meet for Canvas can be found in the Canvas Community. Customers can learn more at: community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-18570-google-hangouts-meet-lti
