This feels a lot like Free for Teacher, and that's on purpose
Free for Teacher was a hit because it handed individual educators something they rarely got: real access to Canvas, with zero procurement and zero red tape. Teachers didn't have to wait on a district decision to try a tool that actually worked for them and their students.
Canvas Lite is the next phase of that idea. It's the same Canvas experience, but it comes with a few upgrades that reflect what we've learned from the original offering, including identity verification for every teacher who signs up (using a government-issued ID and a selfie, through our verification partner, Veriff) and its own dedicated domain, separate from the Canvas environments institutional customers use. Students invited into a course don't go through that verification step, so getting a class up and running still feels quick and simple.
What's actually in Canvas Lite
You're getting the tools teachers reach for the most, including:
- Building modules and pages with rich content
- Collecting file, text, and URL assignment submissions
- Running quizzes and applying rubrics
- SpeedGrader, with annotations, audio and video feedback, and grade exports
- Built-in messaging, discussions, and course announcements
- Course-level integrations with tools like Google Drive, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams

Where Canvas Lite fits alongside Canvas
Think of Canvas Lite as a useful way for individual educators to sample the Canvas ecosystem: the tutor with a handful of students, the homeschool parent teaching a semester-long unit, the instructor looking for a more streamlined way to deliver a course before asking their institution to adopt it more broadly. It comes with a cap of 5 courses with 50 learners per course and a 500 MB storage limit per course. And if a teacher outgrows that or needs administrative features, AI tools, course analytics, attendance tracking, or API access tokens, we're happy to talk anytime about a full Canvas license.
There's a nice side effect here too. As Melissa Loble, our chief learning officer, said: "A learner who works in Canvas Lite this year will recognize Canvas when they walk into a high school, a college or a training program down the road." That familiarity matters more than people give it credit for.
