Connected Assessment: The Vision for 2020

The cornerstone of great learning is building strong connections. Connecting students to teachers and learning styles that work for them. Connecting what educators do to what students learn.

For a decade Canvas has been doing just that—empowering you to build connections that move students forward. During that same time, the MasteryConnect team was connecting educators with assessment tools that help them more effectively target interventions and make informed instructional decisions. When MasteryConnect joined the Instructure team last year, it was a natural fit: we had been living and breathing the same mission. Now, together, we’ll lead the industry with solutions that deliver a better, more impactful assessment management system for both teachers and students.

To start, we’ll cement a world-class quizzing engine as the foundation. We have to be honest here: we’ve been working on New Quizzes functionality for a while. Many of you have been trying New Quizzes, and we’ve learned a lot from your feedback. You’ve been patient (thank you!), and we’ll soon share our 2020 roadmap and launch timeline. You’ll get the functionality you love in “Classic” Canvas Quizzes with a whole lot more. We’re also focused on delivering a seamless migration experience and providing the best education and training for you to implement these changes.

Next, you’ll get more options, support, and flexibility around how you assess and grade students, whether that’s traditional (letter grade) or a standards-based (competency-based/ mastery-based) approach. This year will bring significant changes to the Learning Mastery Gradebook and a retooling of our standards systems (expect an easier alignment process and ways to establish cut scores). You’ll see enhanced tools for your style of teaching—whether it’s performance or rubric-based, summative or formative, K-12 or higher ed—for in-class, online, and blended learning environments.

These enhancements are key to our vision of bringing together the LMS and assessment management system (AMS) for a truly seamless solution. Updates to the assignment workflow, navigation, and user experience are already well underway, with deeper integrations to come.

We are collaborating with Dr. Jonathan Templin, the E.F. Lindquist Chair and professor of Assessment and Educational Measurement at the University of Iowa, to apply new psychometric breakthroughs (notably diagnostic classification modeling) to challenge high-stakes, end-of-level testing for K-12 students. We are already piloting this innovative-assessment model in progressive districts with great success, and we look forward to sharing more about the exciting work.

Ultimately, we want to empower you to connect in the ways that are most meaningful to you and your students. We’re committed to providing students with accessible experiences with accommodations for all types of learners. We’ll deliver new psychometric tools that will give teacher’s valid and reliable data in real-time. We want to do all this with you, in the boat with us, changing the assessment conversation, and focusing on the right measurement to improve student outcomes.
