We’re excited to announce the launch of a new integration between Grammarly and Instructure’s Canvas LMS, designed to provide more value for Grammarly for Education customers within their typical Canvas assignment workflow. Grammarly’s Writing Score LTI provides a seamless solution for students, instructors, and administrators aiming to enhance the writing process and maximize the value of their Grammarly for Education implementation. Read on to learn how this integration helps improve academic outcomes for both higher education and K-12 environments.

    For Students: Empowering Last-Minute Revisions

Every student understands the stress of meeting a submission deadline while striving to produce a well-crafted assignment. With Grammarly’s Writing Score now integrated directly into Canvas, students gain access to a crucial final "check" on the quality of their writing before submitting their work. Regardless of whether or not they’ve used Grammarly before, all students will be able to “check their writing with Grammarly” before they submit within Canvas. Grammarly’s integration will scan their submission for correctness, clarity, delivery, and engagement, providing a composite “score” across those four domains that signal to the student the basic writing quality of their work.

Students are in control of what they decide to do next: submit as is, or decide to make further edits to increase the readability and quality of their submission. If they decide to make further changes, they can download and activate their institution-provided license directly from the Canvas window, make changes within the editor of their choice with Grammarly, then re-upload to see a new score that passes the quality bar they are hoping for. Students still need to go through the normal Canvas submission process after viewing their most recent writing score.

This integration is particularly beneficial during the late-night crunch when students might be tempted to submit work without a thorough review. By receiving instant feedback on their writing, they can make last-minute revisions that enhance clarity, coherence, and emotional impact—confidently submitting more polished, higher-quality work that reflects their best efforts.

For Instructors: Focus on Content, Not Grammar

Instructors often face the daunting task of correcting myriad writing errors, which can detract from valuable time spent on evaluating the depth and substance of student submissions. With Grammarly’s Writing Score offering automated analysis of grammar, style, and readability, students are prepared to submit cleaner and more refined work.

As a result, instructors can dedicate their energy to what truly matters: the quality of ideas and the originality of content presented in written submissions. This shift allows educators to provide more meaningful feedback that fosters critical thinking and creativity in students' writing. The result is a more dynamic classroom experience where the focus is on thought, argumentation, and the overall mastery of writing as a form of thinking and communication.

For Administrators: Maximizing the Value of Your Grammarly for Education Plan

For administrators, Grammarly’s Writing Score integration into Canvas ensures that Grammarly use scales across departments and subjects. By embedding this writing tool directly within the Canvas assignment workflow and seeing a writing score at the point of submission, students have a just-in-time discovery of their school-sponsored Grammarly license and a direct incentive to download, activate, and use the license to turn in higher-quality work. Administrators can be more confident that the licenses they’ve purchased to improve communication across their institution will actually be used.

    Seamless Integration, Better Results

Designed to fit effortlessly into existing assignment workflows within Canvas LMS, the Grammarly Writing Score integration ensures that students can receive immediate feedback on their writing quality simply by clicking on the Grammarly icon within their assignment interface. This instant feedback mechanism allows for real-time revisions and adjustments, enhancing the overall writing process.

Instructors and administrators are thus equipped with enhanced tools that streamline teaching efficiency while boosting student success in any course where writing is an important component. The transition to using Grammarly’s Writing Score in assignments is seamless, allowing students to remain in the flow of their work and instructors to maintain their focus on pedagogy.

A Collaborative Solution for Educational Excellence

This partnership between Grammarly and Instructure represents a commitment to student success and pedagogical innovation. By equipping students with tailored tools for revision and improvement, empowering instructors to focus on deeper academic analysis, and supporting administrators in gaining value from their technology purchases, this integration offers significant benefits for the entire educational community.

We eagerly anticipate witnessing the transformation this new feature brings to the teaching, learning, and assessment of writing across your institution. This is an important step toward fostering an environment where every student has the opportunity to excel in their writing endeavors.
