      Canvas + Microsoft Office 365 Integration

      One of the core beliefs of the Instructure partnership program is that none of us is as awesome as all of us. As you might recall from a previous post, our founders had a grand plan for interoperability in Canvas—they wanted every educational tool to integrate with Canvas seamlessly.

      Interoperability is tremendously important, but you have to take it a step further (i.e., add humans into the mix) to reach edtech nirvana. When real people sit down at a table to figure out what teachers and students really need, and then build innovative new tools based on those needs, you end up with something greater than the sum of its parts. You end up with tools for real people that meet real, human needs.

      Changes To The Platform

      Enter the new Canvas integration with Microsoft Office 365. It considers the humans behind the technology and makes it possible for teachers and students to:

      • Use single sign-on technology to log in to Canvas using Microsoft IDs and passwords.
      • Create documents in Office 365 and submit them as Assignments directly within Office 365 or Canvas.
      • Grade Office 365 documents through SpeedGrader.
      • Link to Office 365 docs in the Canvas Rich Content Editor.
      • Add Office 365 docs directly to Modules.
      • Use Office 365 documents, spreadsheets, or presentations for Canvas Collaborations.
      • Push assignments and grades directly from the Microsoft OneNote Class Notebook to Canvas.

      To provide the best experience possible, we changed the core Canvas platform code for this integration—and we want other edtech providers to take note. By working together as partners, we can provide learning experiences that are not just student-centered, but also human-centered.
