UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NORTHERN DENMARK University College of Northern Denmark Case Study Hjørring, Denmark 10,000 Users Commenced August 2015 The Challenge University College of Northern Denmark is home to more than 10,000 health, teaching, technology and business students. The college's primary mission is to impart real life education; UCN believes it's critical that graduates are not only experts in their fields of study but also well- rounded, employable individuals with a variety of skills and capabilities. To achieve this mission, UCN greatly emphasises collaboration. The college fosters strong links with local and national businesses, providing students with guided workplace experience. Key, too, is cross-discipline collaboration with peers. But collaboration in the virtual realm was proving to be a challenge. "Up until last year, the university college used two separate learning management systems," says Bente Schmidt Nielsen, Project Manager in Learning and IT. "Sharing information across departments - let alone fostering true collaboration - was difficult." instructure.com/canvas/en-gb Key Findings Canvas was procured to replace two learning management systems and is now the primary source for teaching and collaboration for UCN UCN was satisfied by the speed of implementation, which was a high-priority demand. Canvas allows the university to offer a connected, collaborative and accessible learning experience. 01 02 03 The Decision Learning and IT set out to find an LMS that could be used across the university college. Departments and students were used to their own systems, so the team needed something intuitive that would bring clear and immediate benefits. Adoption was crucial - they needed not just to procure and implement this new system, but to familiarise staff and students with its potential benefits. Learning and IT conducted an EU tender and Canvas emerged the winner. Learning and IT was confident that students and staff could easily get to grips with the straightforward user interface and that implementation would be simple and undisruptive.
