[Mapua University] Beyond the Degree: Empowering Lifelong Skills Through Mapúa CareerSprint

Video Transcript
In twenty twenty two, Mapua University joined Arizona State University's Ana Alliance, which is a network of thirty two universities in twenty eight countries worldwide. And Mapua University is the only member from the Philippines. Currently, a number of programs from the ETY School of Business, School of Health Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Medicine are in collaboration with Arizona State University. So as you may all know, we have a lot of programs along engineering and and other programs but these specific schools are in partnership with Arizona State University. With this, Mapua students under these programs can access ASU's world class content and curricula centered on strategies of student success like global immersion, real world experiential learning, advanced and immersive facilities, and digital mastery. One of these is the Mapua Career Sprint.

So Mapo Career Sprint aims to elevate students' learning experience and encourage them to continually grow and expand their skill set. As of now, we have this Mapua Career Sprint Micro certifications, and these will enhance their skills and abilities which are crucial for advancing in the constantly evolving job market. Mapua Career Sprint education programs focus on job specific knowledge that enables them to acquire the professional and technical skills necessary to achieve their objectives. And one of the courses I teach is for positive communication which is under the gender under the general education courses. The course is integrated with relevant contents from the ASU repository that is why you can see an ASU logo there because in Santana in Santana education, if we use learning contents from Arizona State University's repository, we also have to indicate that on our course syllabus.

The course is integrated with relevant contents from the ASU repository, which are very easy to import to our Canvas since ASU also uses Canvas as their LMS. So have this repository wherein teachers can log in and then choose available learning contents that are aligned with the topics for that course, and then it's easy to download and just embed it to our can or to to our Canvas course that we use in Mapua. Aside from these, we also added this Mapua Career Sprint micro certification, Inclusive Mindset, Tools for Building Positive team culture to org g d one zero six for positive communication. It says here that for this micro certification, businesses, universities, and organizations benefit when staff work together smoothly. An inclusive mindset, collaborative team culture, teamwork, and positive communication are among the skills organizations value most.

And we tied that to our topic during week four, which is diversity in the workplace. By the way, for for Mapua University, We use, for every term, we have fourteen weeks to complete the the contents for our Syllabus. So this one is embedded to our topic diversity in the workplace during week four. In this current term that we have, it's already week five. So my students already started working in this inclusive mindset micro certification last week.

Students are provided with the self enroll link which will be added to their list of courses on the same Canvas account that they use in Mapua. So when we are or when we already provided the the self enroll link, they would click on that, and that would register to their Canvas account that they also use for other courses in in their program. So we love this integration because they do not need to go to another platform to do the career sprint because it's already there on their Canvas. So this seamless integration would allow them to be informed about deadlines or about the the activities that they need to do all in one platform. And this is how it looks like on their dashboard.

This inclusive mindset micro certification is divided into seven modules that they can start during week four of the term. The contents will still be relevant in the succeeding topics in the syllabus like Workplace issues and ethics for week five. So as you can see, since it's divided into seven modules, we give them until week ten to finish everything for that specific micro certification. And they can still work on this micro certification until week ten while we are also covering other topics in the syllabus. So since it's a self paced course or micro sir micro certification, they they can just work on that anytime they like as long as they would be able to finish that until week ten.

So aside from the media and reading materials and discussion forum, they are also required to complete quizzes to finish the career sprint. Now what's different with the career sprint is that for the discussion forum, they would not only collab they will not only discuss topics in in their group or in their class, but to other students who are also enrolled to that career sprint. So for example, it's from another section or if it's from another program, then they are able to they are able to collaborate with them or in the discussion forum as well. So once they complete all the requirements, they will receive an email notification of how they can download or share their credential. The The Career Sprint uses Certifier as a digital credentialing tool where they can view their certificates.

Since the inclusive mindset is part of the assessments of poor positive communication, the students submit their credential link and a screenshot of their final grade from the career sprint to the submission bin that was created under GED one zero six course. And the certificate looks like this, You can see that there's a log of Mapua, and the the school, And, also, there is a mark there that is in collaboration with ASU. Aside from this, they can also have the option to add this credential to their LinkedIn profile, which they created during week two where they had an activity to build their professional presence via LinkedIn. So For week two topic, they had to work on their application documents, and one of the one of the activities that we had is they had to build their professional profile at LinkedIn. And once they are done with this inclusive mindset, micro certification, then they then they just they can just add that to their LinkedIn profile.

And I also want to know because it's only this last term that I started working on this program and using the the the micro certification. So I asked my former student about her insights on the on the Mapua career sprint, particularly the inclusive mindset. She she is RV, Lorene Castor, and she's currently a third year student of BS Financial technology. She said that the Bapua Career Sprint encouraged her to pursue more micro certifications that are practical, industry relevant, and enriched through ASU's partnership. Completing the inclusive mindset micro certification clarified key GET one zero six concepts and showed her how diversity fosters respect and Teamwork.

She also believes that this learning will be valuable in the workplace as it taught her to collaborate across backgrounds and build inclusive environments where constructive debate drives stronger results. So aside from the micro certification that is assigned to the GED one zero six, She also completed other career split like Sustainable Earth for her GED one zero four for science, technology, and society. And the other one is for her business data mining course, which is basic prompt engineering with Chad GPT. Another student shared her experience with the Mapua Career Sprint. She is Charity Fernandez.

BA financial management third year student. She said that taking the Mapua Career Sprint micro certifications with ASU was a meaningful experience because it showed her how classroom lessons connect to real life situations and future careers. The inclusive mindset in particular deepened her understanding of diversity and workplace ethics in GED one zero six, making their discussions more personal and relatable. She also believes that this mindset will help her collaborate, adapt, and make a positive just like RV, she also completed another Mapua career career sprint titled, Urban Climate Keeping cities livable with climate research for her, science, technology, and society. So all of these are possible thanks to Canvas.

Because of Canvas, we were able to achieve content embedding. Micro certifications can be paired in GED or other major courses through Canvas. It also allows us to have an accessibility when it comes to materials. Students can access resources, activities for their program courses, and career sprint all in one platform. And it's also very important for the network collaboration.

Canvas enables delivery of ASU Syntana modules to Mapua students. There is also value added experience since micro certifications give students credentials that go beyond the classroom. And it also fosters aligned learning wherein micro certifications connect with course topics like the diversity and workplace ethics and GET one zero six for positive communication. And lastly, student engagement. We know that Canvas is an interactive LMS, And our students enjoy it, especially that GED courses, just like the one I'm teaching, is fully online.

Meaning, we have a synchronous days and synchronous Session for every week. So it's very important that we have this platform for all the resources that they would be needing, but but it would still foster collaboration or discussion among our students. Canvas tools capture participation, reflections, and feedback on learning. That would be all, and thank you very much.
