How Yamaha uses Canvas to create classroom harmony

At Yamaha Music School in Malaysia, teachers use Canvas to enhance their in-person lessons. Shi Bei and her colleagues play music through the platform, share materials and homework, and track student engagement in one place. Canvas helps them stay connected with families and keep every learner moving forward.

My name is Shi Bei and I'm a Yamaha teacher at Yamaha Music School. What's your favorite genre of music? Maybe classical and jazz and also gaming soundtracks. What is out of my expectations is how much time they are spending on Canvas. I can actually track how long the student uses the app. Canvas is new to the new primary course that we are having now. Previously there were never apps and we find that children maybe sometimes don't practice as much and with the app now I would say they practice more.

And the practice doesn't really come as a burden but more towards like, oh, let me use the app and watch some videos or to let me learn from there. I think for parents, previously they need to motivate their kids so much to go to practice But I think with the Canvas now, they also feel less burdened, you know, and it also creates a bond. I think the Canvas kind of strengthens that bond so that they don't have that kind of friction between parents and kids when they don't want to practise. Canvas is the tool that we use to play the music in a class. So I will need to connect my phone to a speaker and then I will just use Canvas to access the music.

So we will use the app, we will just say, Oh, today's lesson seven. So we'll click and then see, we'll check what is there for us to teach and then we will use our books to prepare for the class along with lesson plan in Canvas. The children, they will use Canvas to access their homework. They will look at their homework, what do they do, they will know clearly what they need to practise that week, and then they will click in and then to see videos and learning content and they will also play some quizzes and videos. I was a Yamaha student myself.

I was determined to become a teacher and just want to bring that same joy to the kids. When I finish a song or we finish a song and everybody's like, Again? One more time? Or I like it. That's the moment I feel it's important that they love the class and they love music.
