Video Transcript

Dr. Justin Walding has just been given access to his Innovation and Enterprise course in Canvas. This is the first time this course is being offered, and Justin wants to make sure the course content is engaging and accessible for all students.

Justin wants to embed several multimedia resources from external websites amongst his own content and the resources he’s built using tools such as H5P. He also wants to improve the accessibility of the content and minimise any barriers for learning.

Scenario:

In this video, we’ll demonstrate how easy it is to create media-rich content, integrate third party apps, and design accessible resources in Canvas.

Dr. Justin Walding has just been given access to his Innovation and Enterprise course in Canvas. He’s been building up a library of resources to use in his teaching, and is keen to add these to the course.

When Justin opens the course, he sees the University template that he’ll use as the baseline for his course. He creates a new module and uploads several resources.

He then creates a new page to introduce the concept of idea-generation and evaluation.

Justin can easily drag and drop images and multimedia, find content in the integrated repository, or record video directly from his webcam using Canvas’s Rich Content Editor.

Justin wants to include a video and presentation. To do so, he simply selects the Embed button from the Rich Content Editor toolbar. There’s no need to access the HTML mode.

Justin has also created flashcards with H5P to help his students assess their knowledge and understanding as they move through the course. As Justin’s  faculty has integrated a third party tool via LTI, he can easily access these flashcards from the Rich Content Editor.

Integrating third party tools in Canvas is simple. They can be added by either the institution or a course coordinator. Justin sees that Youtube is integrated into the Rich Content Editor, and decides to add a YouTube video.

Justin also wants to make sure that the content he’s creating is accessible for all students. He clicks the Check Accessibility button and is warned of three issues. He changes the text colour and resolves the issues with the table.

Finally, Justin previews the page and resources as a student by clicking on the ‘Student View’ button to ensure that everything flows as intended.
