Scaling quality across complexity: why Nihon University standardised on Canvas

For Nihon University, scale brings complexity. With faculties and campuses operating in different contexts, maintaining a consistent learning experience requires a platform that supports alignment without limiting flexibility. Nihon University operates 12 colleges and four schools, with campuses throughout Japan. Delivering education at this scale requires a strong foundation. An LMS isn’t optional for us—it’s essential. We’re rethinking education and how it is delivered. One of the most important benefits for us is leveraging the scalability of Canvas to help achieve consistent educational standards. We also operate distance learning programs and 26 affiliated high schools nationwide.

Connecting all of these digitally through Canvas is becoming increasingly critical going forward. Since we are in a digital-first era, we strongly focus on the value and power of data—for students and for faculty. And using data responsibly and effectively, we seek to further advance education and contribute to society. In many ways, Nihon University’s data reflects a cross section of Japan. We want to use that data to create meaningful social value.

When evaluating platforms, usability and data integration were key criteria. That led us to standardize on Canvas. With such a wide range of academic disciplines, the needs for an LMS vary greatly across faculties. Canvas was able to meet all of those needs in one platform. That was a decisive factor for us.

The ability to extract, analyze, and verify all learning data was one of the most important advantages. We aggregate university-wide data through D-CAS, built on Google Cloud. Canvas integrates naturally into this environment. Canvas is highly functional as a standalone LMS, but another of its strengths is in integrating learning data. By linking GPA, assessment results, and learning behavior, we can see a much more accurate picture of each student.

To manage learning data at this scale smoothly and securely, we make extensive use of sub-accounts within Canvas. Canvas was designed with this kind of structure in mind, which made it a good fit for our institution. Education is changing rapidly. We’re moving away from unilateral lectures toward active learning. Discussion, collaboration, and participation are becoming central to the active learning experience.

Peer learning and peer teaching are especially important, and Canvas enables that kind of collaboration. Student needs are increasingly diverse. They need access to learning anytime, anywhere. Accessing multiple perspectives in real time helps discussions grow and ideas develop faster. The way it supports personalized learning for every student, makes Canvas the ideal platform for us.

Through digital practice, our long-term vision is to develop graduates who can succeed globally and across disciplines. Canvas is the de facto standard in North America. It aligns very well with the direction we are heading. We also see strong potential in areas like AI-assisted assignment creation and assessment which may be key in the future. We believe Canvas is the right choice for what comes next.

Canvas gives Nihon University a way to bring consistency to learning while still supporting the needs of different faculties. Leaders can see how students are progressing, connect learning data across systems, and respond more effectively at scale. With structures like sub-accounts and tools that support collaboration, the platform fits the way the university operates today and where it’s heading next.
