Canvas Career Demo: Build Skills-Based Programs You Can Measure
Skills development has moved to the top of every organization's priority list, and learning and development (L&D) teams are poised to lead that work—if they have the right platform to back it up. Canvas Career by Instructure helps L&D teams connect programs to the skills employees need for real roles, reduce manual content work and give leaders clearer evidence of training impact.
And then additionally, once the session ends, a brief survey will appear in your browser. Please take a moment to share your feedback on the session and speakers. And all of our sessions are being recorded and archived on training industry dot com, and you will receive a follow-up email from us I'll include the link to the on demand session for you to share with your team. Now if this is your first training industry event, we would love to welcome you. We exist to make connections among learning and development professionals, and we offer tons of resources to support your role in l and d, like live events like today's showcase, as well as through articles on our website, our magazine, conferences, research reports, our membership, and our podcast.
We would also love to hear about what you've learned from today's session on social media, so please follow us on your favorite platform so we can continue the conversation. And without further ado, it's my pleasure to introduce you to our third speaker today. We have Leo Silva, senior solutions engineer at Instructor. So with that, Leo, take it away. Hey, everyone.
Good afternoon. Good morning. Good evening, Penny, where you are. I'm super glad to connect with you today. Today's session, we're going to be talking about building skills based programs that you can measure.
As Liz, thank you so much for the introduction. My name is Leo Silva with Instructure. I'm a solutions engineer, and this is my first training session. So if it's your first time, give us a like or thumbs up or reaction. We're super excited to connect with you today.
And the reason I'm here, the reason why they brought me on is because they wanted me to tell you that now you can. By the end of this demo, we want to make sure that you can align learning programs to real roles in in demand high skills, use AI to build content faster and reduce administrative overhead, give learners visibility into their own skill development career progress, and then track program impact and report on trading ROI from a single dashboard. Are you with me? Let's get right on to it. Before we go into the actual live demo, let's talk about learning and development. Some people call us learning and development folks or the team or department, but anyone that works in education, training, compliance, certification has that learning and development hat on.
So today, we're going to focus a lot on what makes us unique, because what really makes us special is that we focus on the before and the after. Every learning process starts with a thought of how does this start and then goes through that process. After, right after you're done, you're back in the start. It's time to do it again. So if you are in this role for a while, you understand that we're trying to get people to go across the bridge.
And if you haven't been here long, I'm pretty sure you felt this, but sometimes you feel like you're alone. We're trying to prove the impact. You're trying to say, hey, this is the right way. This is where we should go. But trying to get people across the bridge can mean a lot of things.
And so I went into Gemini, Google Gemini AI, and I asked, tell me about lifelong learning in an info chart, and it gave me this big busy slide. But essentially what it says here is that learners are looking for a way to begin learning. How do they do that now? They typically go into search engines, as you see here. They look for portals and so on, but they want to find an easy way to begin learning so they can enroll and get things started. Then there's the professional learning landscape.
This is what professionals are trying to upskill. They want that promotion. They want to get that new skill. They're busy, so they don't have a lot of flexibility. So you need something that can adapt to their fast paced environment so that they can get that training completed.
Once they complete the training, they're back in the start, right? There's also compliance regulators. This is where you get some legal requirements, licenses that you need to make sure you keep up with training. So you want a system that can also scale in different directions so that you can always able to certify and audit against those completions. And then finally, there's the validating skills, earning certifications. These are individuals that are looking for specifics that they want to be certified on that they can take that exam and finally be accredited or be seen out there, right, and share that digital certificate.
So all in a nutshell, let's see how we can bring this all together with a solution that's designed to accommodate the entire journey, keeping the learning at focus on the learner experience. So we'll start with a demo of Canvas Career. Canvas Career, for those of you that work in learning and development for a while, you have heard of Canvas. Canvas Career was designed in the backbone of Canvas. And think of it as all the people who used Canvas in the past after they completed higher education, they went into the workspace and then they wanted some solution to address and they really enjoyed the Canvas experience.
So what we've done is we've taken all the functionality that they've always asked for to be brought into the professional world and we've designed Canvas Career. So I'm now logged into Canvas Career as a learner. What you're going to notice is that everything is kind of upfront. There's a lot of room for, hey, here's where you are, here's where you're going, and here's what you need to focus on next. Right away, learners tell us that they want to know what it is that they're working towards, what is it that they're doing.
So being able to see their activities, skills that they've earned, and we're going to emphasize on skills a little bit soon, and even how much time they've spent learning. This is because they want to be in control. They want to know exactly where they're headed and what they've accomplished. It won't be just a completed course that goes inside a bucket never to be seen again. Furthermore, they're able to see courses that they've completed.
Courses could be a trainee, it could be a session, however you I'm referring to this as a course, but it could be anything that's a learning involved. And they can have those completed. But take a look at right here with this specific piece. Here, we're also showing the learner how the trajectory is going. They're sixty percent done.
And because they're busy professionals, the number one feedback we hear from them is they need to know upfront what is it that they signed up for. And that means the next module, learning object, is only going to take fifteen minutes and it's a page or it's a quiz or it's an assignment. So that upfront gives them the flexibility to schedule understand that if I got only fifteen minutes, I can knock this out right now versus going in and figure out as we go and stop midway through something which can kind of hinder that learning and retention process. Furthermore, learners also want to be able to engage with learning content beyond the learning phase. And what we've done, we expose them to what we call collections.
Collections are a way that you can assemble different support documentation or how tos or videos, any content that you want to provide them access without having to go back into a learning module and have to go through the sequence or find it. They can easily search, find what they're looking for, navigate to those contents, whether that's a full course, as we see here, or specific learning objects that you want them to have access to. Over time, this is going to be a go to place for any information, additional resources that they need as they've already completed a course or becomes a tool they can use in the field, right? If I'm in the field, I need a reference guide, I can go to this one place where I learn to get the material that I need to get things done. Very game changing, big picture, great feedback from learners. Furthermore, we also have something called a notebook.
So, as people are learning with content, they want to be able to take notes, jot notes down, and the notebook is going to give them access to everything that they've done inside here, and they can highlight items within courses. So if I was to click in one of these notes, it's going to bring you straight to that course content. In the course content, you have different ways you can create content, which we'll see later on. But here, they're able to highlight things and add it to the notebook. They can add notes throughout.
They can also add more comments and stuff to this note, and it becomes a growing notebook. Within the course content, they can also engage in different ways. We leverage AI tools. Canvas Careers is an AI native, and so the learner can engage with study tools, which is going to serve up various different options on how they can engage with this content. Think about getting a quick summary on this content before I dive in if this is an extensive page.
Think about creating flashcards on the fly, and the list keeps growing. So we keep adding more functionality to study tools to allow learners to engage with the content in different ways. As learners are going through learning content, they are able to see their progress right away. They see these check bars showing that they've completed specific modules. You do have the option that they just visit the page, it marks as satisfied, or that they have to mark something done, or they have to comply with a specific minimum before they can continue on.
You can have all these different capabilities to ensure they're on the right path. But a course wouldn't be the same if it's just a course that goes into this bucket of completed courses never to be seen again. So what you have the capability of doing Canvas Career is to attach skills to course content. What that does is it allows the learner to come into Skillspace and see all the skills that they've gained. And some people says, well, but so well.
Stay tuned because I'm going share why skills are so important today and why is it so relevant. But learners can come in and say, well, at this skill, I am an office or I am a beginner or I am proficient, I'm advanced or I'm expert. Some learners told us that, well, this is a new learning management system that we're using. Why do I look the same as everybody else? I've got experience. We provide the capability that they can upload their resume, and this is going to extract skills from the resume and display it in their Skillspace so they can bring their skills they already have into the environment, and they're able to filter down to see only skills that they've gained from the trainings that you provided, the courses that you provided, or those that they brought with them.
And when they look at these skills, when they click in the skills such as this here, they're able to be to see the evidence. Think about what courses am I taking or am I engaged with that is related to this skill? What learning objects have I interacted with to get me to the status that I'm in? And furthermore, for those who are looking to advance their career or enroll in other courses, you as an administrator, you can make course recommendations, whether this is a hard reference that you want to do or if you want to allow AI to do the work for you. So AI can also make recommendations based on the aspirations of the learner. So if you want to learn more about finance, it's going to serve up more finance related courses. Maybe there's specific structure of a course.
When those things happen, you have them be served up as part of a program. So, a program is a way you can have multiple courses combined that have to be performed as a required piece, optional, self and auto enrolled, self enrolled. So, you really get the flexibility of creating different types of courses that are adaptable to the learner or enforcing specifics if you're in those industries that you have to make sure they complete certain modules and content before moving forward. But as you can see here, clear expectations, they can come in, they know exactly what they need to do. They go through the notebook and they can see all their notes throughout the entire history.
And then finally going into SkillSpace, because SkillSpace is where these skills that they've gained live on. And when I talk about that, about skills and why they're important, let me share something with you. There's been some studies or white papers, and here's one example. First, I'll talk about this one by McKinsey and Company that talks about when skill gaps are expected to occur within organizations. And as you can tell here, there's a lot of organizations out there that feel like we need to upskill right now.
So basically half of us here are almost obsolete from their perspective. We need to upskill. There's also another report from World Economic Forum. I've got the links in here as well, so you can check them out in-depth. But to sum it all up to you, the skill gap is universal.
So eighty seven percent of companies report that they're already facing or they expect significant skills gap within the next few years. Learners are hungry for growth. So seventy four percent of workers, they want to learn new skills. They're open to retraining, learn new skills just so they can remain employable in the shifting market. Like, for example, who here thought that four years ago you'd be taking so many AI related courses? Well, we're here.
And then the clock is ticking. By two thousand and thirty, thirty nine percent of core job skills are going to change entirely due to evolving industry demands. So it's clear skills are here. They need to be relevant and they're expiring more quicker and quicker more than ever. So now that we've seen the learner journey, let's take a shift and go into the admin side of things.
So right now, we're logged into Canvas Career as an admin. And the first thing I want to talk about is how AI becomes such an easy to use tool. Because when people think of AI, they think this is a tool that can do anything that we want. But those who have been using AI for a while, they understand that the best AI is when it has the right context, it's in the right place at the right time. So the Ignite AI agent inside of Canvas Career does just that.
So in this example here, we are going to talk about creating courses, learning modules, whatever you call it. I'm going to refer to it as courses here. And right away, get to see this list of courses. Whether you're going to filter down, sort, what I want to call your attention to is this Generate Course button. This is our Ignite AI showing up for everyone that you have in the system that's going be doing administrative work to have their personal assistant.
How does that behave? So in this example, because we are trying to create a course, you are able to upload source documents. So think about spec sheets and presentations or PDF files up to five at a time to use as context as we build this out. So think about how things were before and how things could be after you have this kind of assistance. And again, what I'm going to talk about here is how this is timely, it's in the right place, in the right time, with the right context. In this example, we're going to keep it very experimental.
I'm not going to upload any documents. You can keep your documents in here, in the source materials, right? So, you only have to upload it to the LMS once and then it lives on. But we can come in here and save chat and I'm going to ask to create a course about how to make strawberry ice cream from scratch. So, AI is very experimental, but this is the only prompt I'm giving. I'm not even giving it any sources.
If you were to give sources, it's going to have some sort of guardrails that's going to help you ensure that the content is only coming from the material that you provided. But because I haven't, I'm just going to go ahead and do this experiment. What's the course name and main topic? Making ice cream. And once it feels like it's got enough context, it's going to start doing its thing. And then what's the learning objective? Make ice cream from scratch.
Right. So as it's doing this, I want to open up the nutrition facts. So when you're engaging with the Ignite AI agent, it's going to give you access to what permissions it uses. You can view the level permissions and also the nutrition facts. Something that I want to call out is that your data is not used for training, so you can be confident in how you're using the tool.
And furthermore, there's also a concept that we talk about, which is human in the loop. The AI is not going to do anything unless you're okay with it. It's always going to connect with you and make sure that the next step is approved, which is why we call it an assistant. It's always going to check with you. It's not going to just act up on your behalf.
And then what units will make sense? I'll just put general units. See, I'm not even being too descriptive. I'm keeping very open, letting it do its thing. And it is now and then if you think about AI, like we're now in the dial up phases of AI, right? We've just started AI. They're trying to build the data centers all over the world to kind of speed things up.
But in the future, this is only going to get better and better. So with the little resource and the little prompt I put in here, again, you could have started with a larger prompt with more information would have been great, but I just gave it just a little bit. And now it's starting to create a course outline of introduction to ice cream making essential ingredients, equipment and tools. And you can come in here, oops, can come in here and make some changes along the way, delete some of this stuff, add more. But if you feel like this is pretty good, you can say, all right, it passed my first check, this is good for us to get started.
Mind you, right now it isn't yet creating all content, human always in the loop and you approve it throughout the entire process. And if things change along the way, you've got one learning object that's got more context, you've got more files to support that content creation, you can do that along the way. But I'm going to trust what is said here and I'm going to say this welcome page generate that content for me. You don't have to do it one at a time. You can also do, for example, I also want to see this essential ingredients list And you can just ask it to create various different contents all at once.
Again, this isn't something that you're going to click once and the course is done. It's making sure that you're creating the best content with the right structure that aligns with your objectives and goals, and essentially reducing the administrative time, so you can focus more on your strategy. So here's a page that it did create, it created this essential ingredients page. This one's ready as well, so I'm going to go ahead and view it. And right away, here's what's giving me some sort of introduction behind the science behind the scoop, talking about some of the temperatures there, ingredients, building ice cream knowledge and then some more details here.
Right. Let's take a look at one more page. Ingredients, milk, cream. Okay, now it's going into more details here. Great.
As you can see, it has some sort of consistency in the way that it wrote the content. You can also create a prompt that you would like to see this differently and kind of have it mold and then over time become a really efficient assistant. Along the way, you are able to make edits, right? Personal edits. If you want to add images, add videos or other content, can do also in here. But once these are done and confirmed, you can create a course and just as simple as that, this course is going to be created.
It'll create the entire course, it'll create all the different learning modules, the units, each of the pages and assignments, everything out of the box can be ready to go in a few minutes, minding that it did have the right context. And if I go into the course now, you're going to see that it does have like all the different units with the content in here. But if you're working through this course, I want to give you some more exposure into tools and things that are available along the way is that if you're engaging with content, you can still from here engage with the Ignite AI. And whether you're generating units, multiple units, assignments, or chat to build, it's going to be here to help you along the way. If you're one of the institutions that use SCORM files, you can upload your SCORM content here and have that run as part of an assignment.
We do have a capability of creating syncable objects. Syncable objects are a way that you can keep learning objects outside of a course but use them in different courses. So the capability there is once you upload one data source, which is a syncable object, it will then update every course throughout. So it's going to minimize the workload. You don't have to remember what courses are using, what versions, you just have one version that once that gets updated, it simulates throughout all the courses and saves you tons of time by creating efficiency.
And then we also have like settings in here where you can download the course content, upload different courses. We do have various different tools built into the settings area, but something I want to talk about is scores. So, this is something that quizzes are being taken and it gets autograded, it's all going to live in here. And you could also have an instructor grade provide feedback because all that funnels back into the learner so they can see in their trajectory what the feedback was and how they're doing. And then lastly, here you do have the option to integrate different LTI tools or apps with the learning experience.
In my example, I've got these different apps. So there's hundreds and thousands of tools out there that fully integrate with Canvas and Canvas Career so that you can optimize the learning experience. As I come back around, take a quick break here, and I'm going to go back into courses. We talked about programs, how you can stitch courses together. But let's talk about how you can tie the courses to your skills.
That can sound like a tedious task, very detail oriented, but something I want to talk about is you can have your own skills taxonomy loaded into the software, into Canvas Career. So the solution is going to adapt and refine the skills based on your taxonomy. Out of the box, it's going to give you Bloom's taxonomy, and you can see more details about it here. And you can upload your own. That can be part of the configurations.
And then over time, you're going to start to see all the skills related to specific courses and programs and how impactful they are. But some people may think, well, this skill thing, I'm not so advanced in it. Like, I don't know how to map this thing out. How do I do this? Again, I'll talk about the Ignite AI agent. It shows up when you need it most at the right place with the right context.
And in this example, I want to see my list of courses or programs That's going to allow me to come in and say these are the courses that I have. Here's an example of a course has no skills attached to. So, I'm just going to go ahead and this one as an example. So, when you pull up these, this one's been run. Let me give you one a different one here just because I think I wanted to show you one that hasn't been touched.
Maybe this one. Here's the AI agent, so if you have no idea exactly which the skills are and you don't want to start from scratch and build it out, you can also have the AI run and extract those skills. It's going to serve them up. It's going to map them up to individual, you know, to the course, individual learning objects within the course. And over time, you will be able to then understand what does your course library look like, which assets are tied to these skills.
And even most importantly, is keep the skills progressing, because as you load your skills in there, you have the capability to merge skills and make them become part of other skills. So essentially, this is a growing list of skills. If there's a new skill that shows up tomorrow and you want to begin honing in that direction, the solution is going to be able to accommodate that. Lastly, but not least, I want to also talk about the people management aspect because as we have those programs out there, you need to know that there's a people manager in here. Something that's really unique in this space is that not only you're able to see the organization of these people or organization they're with, their role, their teams, departments, but you can also do bulk actions.
So let's say everyone that works in administration at a specific partner that we support, you can come in here and filter, you can do bulk actions from here. And some of these bulk actions could be such as enrolling them in the program, enrolling them in a course, or even those collections where they have access to information, even though they're not associated with the course, you can do that here in bulk. You also have the option to assign a leader. So as this grows and you begin to support different programs, you can have the department manager or the person's manager or leader follow those learners along the way so they have access to the Data and Insights dashboard, which is what we're going to close with. But essentially, everybody can be involved in the learning process and simplifying those who's involved to make sure everybody's successful.
If everyone takes a little bit of ownership in the learning journey, everyone's just going be so much better off. Now, if you're not managing this personally, you are able to integrate with your CRM system, HRIS integration system, integration options. And this allows you to map up your courses, like the users, right, when the users and how they align with the enrollment. So, what courses should they be taking based on their role, based on whatever that is, that is your criteria. And then you can also map grades.
So, if you want grades to travel back somewhere else, that'll be able to be upkept in here. Last thing I want to talk about before we kind of bring things home is that with Canvas Career, room of expansion is it can get as creative as you need. So as you support different programs, institutions, departments, partners, you will have the ability to create sub accounts. Sub accounts are a way that you can come and say, we've got a new client or a new program, whatever that is, or department like I have set up here, I have an HR, a corporate department, then I've got Leo's World. In Leo's World, it's got a grocery shopping team.
You can have different variations of courses that can be co branded, they can look different, they can have different pieces. So, everything kind of flows into the same learning platform, but everybody that logs in has a completely different experience based on how you've set these subaccounts. So as a wrap up, how impactful could learning be if you can't show progress, if you can't show ROI? With Data and Insights, it's going to give you out of the box analytics that is powered by Ignite AI. And what this is going to empower you to do is log in in a centralized location and see progress. What progress means every person can be something different.
So in my example here, I want to see within the past year and I want to set a criteria for what is it that should surface to tell me that this learner needs help? So, you can create your own thresholds, maybe a percentage or missing assignments or whatever the case might be or late submissions. And this is going allow you to then send a note to this person. This is also going to surface specific dashboards or dashlets, smaller data pieces in here that's going to give you some insights such as progression, skills earned, time spent. Another one is kind of a leaderboard who's out there doing the most, identify those right away, and then even understanding what are the popular skills going on here. This allows you to go granular, right? So, if you wanted to go and send a message to one person, you can.
We also have insights feed. This is a way you can digest everything in bulk and come in here and say, I've got some skills insight. I've got learning spent insight and learning insight. So twenty users are yet to start. From here, yourself, an admin, or one of the team leaders can come in and send a note.
Again, Ignite AI is running in the background and is getting relevant information and creating a personalized note for these learners that you can rephrase, write your own, pulling up the learners. Again, human always in the loop and you can send this off. That would come from the person, not from a system notification. So it's personal, it's direct, and it really ensures that you're not just creating these programs, but you're helping everybody push everyone across the finish line. Now, this out of the box report might not be the report that you're looking for.
So again, again, the AI is showing up with context in the right place at the right time, but you can start to build through here, through Ignite AI. In here, you're going to have available data sets that you can see. So think about the creativity behind putting this together with spreadsheets, whatever the case might be. In here, you're going to be able to create engaging dashboards that tell a story much easier. And then as an admin, you'll be able to create a dashboard that goes out to different users in a solution, also being able to design a learner dashboard.
So if you want them to see different data points, it's all going to roll up into this one place. So as you saw, Canvas Career is going to allow you to reinvent and reimagine how learning is done. And think of it, it doesn't have to be you pointing the direction. It can be you helping people go across, not feel alone. And then eventually everybody will be on the other side.
And if you don't act fast, time is going to progress and this is going to look much like we see here where you're going to be in the future. I want to open up to questions. I know we may have had some questions in the chat, but as we sum up, think about the before and the after state. You can align your programs to high demand skills. You can use AI to move away from administrative tasks and focus on strategy.
You can give learners a personal skill development career process that they own up to, and you can track the program impact and report from one single dashboard. So I'll share this last page here. This is our page at instructure dot com. You can find Canvas career if you want to see. I have the URL up here, but I'm also having this scannable QR code if you want to navigate with your smartphone.
But we're open to any questions. I know we're up on time, so maybe let me see. Oh, twenty two of stuff in the chat. We'll finish. Yeah.
I can jump in since we are short time. Stephanie had a great question. Using Ignite AI, how can you inject brand guidelines like colors and the logo? Does that happen at the end or during course creation throughout? There's different ways, Stephanie, that can help. I definitely would say if you're interested in learning more, connect with us. But we do have some people that utilize prompts.
We also have another function called a modern block content editor, so you can create a template and it'll inject those flavors. So absolutely connect with us and we'll show you a demo of it. Beautiful. And that is all that we have time, Leo. As I say, Britney was killing it with all of the questions in the chat.
But is there anything else you would like to leave at the audience today before we take our next break? Thanks, everybody. Thank you so much, Leo. I really appreciate it. And for everyone else, yeah, we'll be taking about a fourteen minute break. Up next, we do have Graham for their session sponsored by sixty learning using AI and SMB collaboration to scale enablement.
So I hope you all stick around for our next session, which will begin shortly. I will see you all there. Bye, everybody.
In this demo, Leo Silva, senior solutions engineer at Instructure, will lead a live walkthrough of how Canvas Career brings skills alignment, artificial intelligence (AI)-supported content creation and impact reporting together. You'll see how skill extraction works in practice, how AI tools help teams build and manage content faster and how the admin dashboard gives leaders a single place to track progress, spot gaps and report on impact.
This demo will show attendees how to:
- Align learning programs to real roles and in-demand skills.
- Use AI to build content faster and reduce administrative overhead.
- Give learners visibility into their own skill development and career progress.
- Track program impact and report on training ROI from a single dashboard.
