Canvas by Instructure is the learning management system (LMS) deployed by Sweetwater Union High School District as part of its 1:1 initiative. Located in San Diego County, Sweetwater is the largest high school district in California and second largest union high school district in the nation. In 2012, the district provided 6,500 iPads to teachers and 7th grade students. Within the next six years, Sweetwater will equip all of its 44,000 students with personal electronic devices. David Damico, Sweetwater's director of Educational Technology and Alternative Education, said the LMS is more critical to the success of a 1:1 initiative than the personal device used because it provides a way to engage K-12 stakeholders. He said Sweetwater's teachers gravitated toward Canvas because "it's interactive, it's user friendly, it's dynamic, it makes collaboration easy."
