The testing eect is the phenomenon where taking a quiz can enhance later retention of studied materials (Roediger III & Karpick, 2006). Canvas quiz features can be used to enhance learning via the testing eect (Sullivan, 2017), and they can do much more. The testing eect, also known as retrieval practice, practice testing, or test-enhanced learning, has been experimentally demonstrated many times over. It occurs when students take quizzes shortly after they study and they show better performance on a final test relative to students who only study materials (even when no feedback is given on a quiz; Roediger III, McDaniel, & McDermott, 2006). Interestingly, recent research has demon- strated that this evidenced-based intervention can be implemented in Canvas (Sullivan, 2017), and Canvas quizzes can do much more.
