If you’re a Canvas user, chances are that you’ve used an LTI® tool to enhance the teaching and learning experience. In fact, we’ve learned that, among Canvas institutions, 99.3% of colleges and universities and 93.3% of K-12 schools have implemented at least one technology using the LTI® standard. This widespread usage makes it clear that LTI® is a technology worth investing in.
Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI®) has paved the way for educators to transform the learning experience by offering a standard way for learning applications to connect with an existing system (like Canvas). We love knowing that by building Canvas around these open standards, there's greater freedom for teachers to select which applications meet their pedagogic needs and that students can consistently have engaging and simplified learning opportunities in our platform. Compliance with the standard is growing quickly, making our one-for-all plug and play ecosystem that much richer. And thanks to the forward-thinking of our friends at IMS Global, we're excited to see where the introduction of LTI® Advantage takes us next!
This LTI® Advantage initiative aims to demystify what it takes for institutions to have deep and meaningful integrations with their providers. At a very basic level, LTI® Advantage broadens the feature set of LTI® by targeting specific problems many students and faculty face today. Identifying a clear set of institution- and district-wide challenges in this way simplifies implementations, encourages tools to communicate with one another, and allows us to spend more time innovating within our own solutions. We believe this initiative brings us one step closer to true interoperability and makes a greater impact on student success—and what's more important than that, right?

On top of our charge toward LTI® Advantage, we're enthusiastic about the rapid development of the LTI® specification itself. We believe this upcoming version maintains the spirit of LTI® 1.1, which we expect will encourage rapid adoption, while still moving the standard forward in our industry. Instructure is actively participating in the working group involved in its development, alongside many of your favorite tool providers (and even some of our fellow LMS providers). We can see our community isn't just uniting around LTI® Advantage, it's coming together to march in the direction of an even better future with more robust and interoperable solutions in sight. That's pretty incredible, and we hope you'll seek to participate in IMS Global activities as we continue to add more and more value over the coming months.
Before I sign off, I'd like to say that the awesomeness coming with this new chapter of LTI® isn't something that can happen overnight. It requires thoughtful application of the standard and its associated services to make the biggest impact. Instructure, as well as many of the other members in the community, is looking forward to what 2018 will bring to our world of standards, and hopefully you feel the same.
