Are professional associations on the decline? Some say that social networks are making associations irrelevant, especially to millennials. However, some associations have been ahead of the curve in leveraging technology. Our CEO, Paul Freedman, along with Credly CEO Jonathan Finkelstein, recently penned an op-ed on three megatrends that will support the growth of associations:
- Unbundling of the Degree – Employers are questioning the value of the bachelor’s degree in comparison to “more tangible evidence of skills that matter in the workplace.” Certificates have become the “fastest-growing postsecondary credential”, and associations offer non-degree credentials that can demonstrate professionals’ real-time knowledge and skills.
- Social Networks: Trust and Verify – Social networks, particularly LinkedIn, are the place to share credentials and get noticed by employers. Association-backed credentials helps to validate skills and expertise.
- From Content to Assessment – Along with authenticating digital credentials, associations can assess members worldwide with the use of technology.
Ultimately, by leveraging technology, associations have the power to grow as key players in advancing member industries and serving as industry advocates.
