Looks like Robert Fulgham was right when he said, “All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten.” Early childhood education does an excellent job of fostering the development of social skills like negotiation and cooperation. After these early years, schools tend to teach by lecture and in doing so, the emphasis on social skills training falls to the wayside. In a recent New York Times article, Claire Cain Miller argues that to be successful in today’s workplace, people need strong social skills. As such, schools need to incorporate social skills training into their curriculum. What does that look like? According to Cain Miller, the Minerva Schools are doing an excellent job on this front.
