Off-boarding a departing employee isn’t easy, yet companies often put little effort into the process. How do companies ensure their soon-to-be former employee’s knowledge and expertise are retained in the transition to the new hire? In a recent Harvard Business Review article, Dorothy Leonard of Harvard Business School recommends pairing the departing employee with a new hire in an “accelerated apprenticeship.” The pairing, Leonard argues, allows the new employee to observe the “expert employee” in action and then go through tasks themselves to learn by doing. We could not agree more that capturing expertise is crucial in skill development, which is exactly what our partners do when they provide model answers for their learners to view and reflect upon in ApprenNet. Rather than physically shadowing, capturing expertise on video ensures your departed employee can pay it forward over and over again.
